10 of the best rom coms to make you laugh, cry and feel all the emotions

February, the month of love… or eating chocolate (that I buy myself in the Valentines sales) while watching rom coms and chocking on popcorn between fits of laughter.

I have watched possibly every romantic comedy out there and I am a critic in my own mind. They need to be funny but I also want them to pull my heartstrings in every direction, you get me?

But there is nothing worse than wasting your time watching a sh*t rom com. So, girls (and boys) here are 10 that you will want to watch over and over again!

BRIDGET JONES DIARY - SEQUEL

Let’s kick it off with the best rom com sequel out there because let’s be real… Mean Girls 2 was f*cking sh*t. The Bridget Jones films are perfect if you’re single, having a bad day and need a pick-me-up.

Plot: It’s about a British woman (called Bridget, obviously) who is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary. The sequel follows her through a number of years – I won’t be leaving any spoilers in this post don’t worry!

THE BREAK-UP

I mean, Jennifer Aniston is in it so obviously it’s good.

Plot: In The Break-Up art dealer Brooke Meyers feels unappreciated and neglected by her immature boyfriend Gary Grobowski, who is partner with his two brothers in a tourism business, and decides to break-up with him to make Gary miss her. Gary misunderstands her true intention. Both of them follow the wrong advice of family members and friends, beginning a war of sexes with no winner.

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING

Julia Roberts on a mission.

Plot: When a woman’s long-time friend reveals he’s engaged, she realises she loves him herself and sets out to get him, with only days before the wedding.

TRAINWRECK

Trainwreck came out in 2015 and although it’s not the most ‘creative’ film and is similar to a lot of others out there it’s still a good laugh.

It’s one of my favourites because I can relate to the character so much. She’s a journalist, who is extremely open and sexual… do I have to say more?

The plot: Having thought that monogamy was never possible, a commitment-phobic career woman may have to face her fears when she meets a good guy.

PRETTY WOMAN

It wouldn’t be a top rom com list without a few films starring Julia Roberts let’s be honest.

Plot: A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets… only to fall in love.

MEAN GIRLS

Mean Girls will always be so fetch. But don’t waste your precious time watching Mean Girls 2.

Plot: Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.

SEX AND THE CITY

I’m a journalist and I’m single… of course, Carrie Bradshaw is my spirit animal. The TV series is amazing but the film is just as good (not better, but still one of the best rom coms).

Plot: A New York City sex and love writer is finally getting married to her Mr Big but her three best girlfriends must console her after one of them inadvertently leads him to jilt her.

CLUELESS

The fashion and the outfits in Clueless are iconic it’s worth a watch for some inspiration alone.

Plot: A rich high school student tried to boost a new pupil’s popularity, but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way.

BRIDESMAIDS

If you want to laugh so much that your sides and mouth hurt, then here you go…

Plot: Competition between the maid of honour and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef.

LOVE ACTUALLY

I always pull Love Actually off my DVD shelf at Christmas but it’s an all-round great film that you can enjoy any time of the year.

Plot: It follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London.
